The MIDI Note Number Frequency Wavelength Table

MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is a protocol to transfer controlling data in a musical context. MIDI-Controllers appear in forms of keys, wheels, faders, pads and sensors. The protocol contains information about pitch or velocity, which is stored in a 7 bit system. There are hence 128 (0 – 127) different values for these parameters. If you like to know what MIDI can be useful for read my article Jazz-Blues-Generator. I have used MIDI and Max/MSP to build a tool that automatically plays jazz blues standards with a solo in the fitting scale.

Below, you see a table that shows MIDI note number 21 up to 108 with the corresponding note name in English and German notation. I also added frequency, wavelength and some extras to it. Use it as a reference whenever you like.

Train Your Ears to Recognize a Frequency in Equalization

A child is able to perceive frequencies between 20 Hertz and 20 000 Hertz. As you grow older a natural hearing loss occurs. So when you are 50, you might just be able hear up to 15 or 16 kHz and by the time you turn 80, your upper limit normally drops down to 8 or 9 kHz. That is also the reason why some older people have trouble understanding the high pitched, squeaky voice of their grand-children. As most things in life hearing abilities and hearing loss are highly individual. They vary from one person to another.

Jazz Blues Generator

The Jazz-Blues-Generator is a program written in Max/Msp that plays a 12-Bar-Dominant-Jazz-Blues chord progression and generates a fitting solo over it. It can be used

  • to get to know the chords, modes and sound of the 12-Bar-Dominant-Jazz-Blues
  • as a backing track to practice improvisation over variable chord progressions
  • to gain musical ideas of the random solo that is generated

To understand my work and work approach I give a small introduction of Max/Msp and MIDI. After that, I will explain my concept in detail.

How To Make The Right Study Choice

Published on March 14, 2011 by in all, life

One of the most important decisions you have to make in your life is the choice of your studies. Therefore, this choice should be made consciously and independent of social conditionings. It is common and a well known stereotype that young people often study a specific subject to live up to the expectations of their parents. This results in bad grades, unhappiness, mediocre careers or even worse.

Tabs – Bach’s Prelude No.1 For Cello ( Guitar Cover )

recording and mixing

Recently I had to make a mono recording of an instrument for my study. The goal was to pick a good microphone and microphone position to make the best recording of the sound source and the room around it. I selected the DPA 4090 and the MXL 2006. The DPA 4090 is an omnidirectional condensator microphone which means that sound is recorded equally on every point on a circle around the mic.  The sound of the DPA is very natural whereas the MXL 2006, a large diaphragm condensator microphone, is characteristic. Due to the specific mechanism of transforming sound waves into alternating current some frequencies are boosted, and others are weakened. Here you can hear the sound of the different microphones with the DPA first.

Tabs -The Ballad Of Chasey Lain ( Acoustic Jazz Cover )

One of my favourite pop-punk songs of the late 90′s by the Bloodhound Gang.

I have been playing this simple song for quite a while but never paid too much attention to it. One day I accidentally played a seventh chord instead of the first power chord. It gave the song a different flair which I found worth considering. I extend all chords by thirds and seventh and played them with a swinging rhythm. Further I adjusted parts of the vocals.

How To Use The Circle Of Fifths

I am a person who enjoys learning and applying methods with the motivation to improve my outcome in any situation. Learning an instrument you come across hundreds and thousands of tips and tricks that promise an enhancement in your learning curve. I found out that the best are the basic and simples ones. The deep understanding of basic music theory and the ability to apply that knowledge gives you way more possibilities than learning just another chord, scale, pattern and so forth. Most of the time you can derive these scales, chords and patterns from your basic knowledge. Additionally, understanding let you use them more freely or adjust them as you want.

Today, I want to show you how to understand, internalize and apply the circle of fifths. It is a tool, you most certainly came across in your school years. Nevertheless, fully understanding it can raise your effectiveness, speed and accuracy when it comes to musical questions tremendously. My goal for you here is to help you create a mental picture of the circle and to show you how you can use it in different areas.

Tabs – A New Hope by Blink 182 ( Acoustic )

Published on January 25, 2011 by in all, tabs

I was a huge fan of Blink 182 in my teens. Not only of the music but also the way of life and humor they had motivated me to make music. To be honest, I actually picked up my guitar after a two-year break to play along with a Blink song. I figured out how to play their songs pretty quick, because they are easy as hell. But that wasn’t too important to me then. It was the sound of the music and the stupid humor that counted. I went to their concerts in Germany, bought all their records and learned their riffs.

Tabs – The Leaving Song ( Part 1 ) by AFI

Published on January 24, 2011 by in all, tabs

The Leaving Song is a cover I uploaded in 2006. I didn’t want to show my face at that time, everything was pretty new for me then. As you can see in my later videos, I changed my opinion on showing once face in youtube videos.

This video has the most views of my uploads on my old youtube channel. I can think of two plausible reasons for this.
